An Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Had Just Met Supported Me Land the Job That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a companion. Because my friend was considering pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had planned a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a large ten-floor structure on the UWS called International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the dining hall, where we got some food, took a seat, and started talking to people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at Columbia University. He inquired what I my profession was, and I explained that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at the university – close to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The man from Iraq came up to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but immediately told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a city where opportunities abound – she said: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his full name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in so many ways. I didn't possess the confidence or nerve to approach someone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that job in New York paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
