Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
