Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
